FRESNO - In the penultimate match of the club's inaugural season, Los Zorros defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 3-0 at Chukchansi Park Friday. Goals from Christian Chaney, Alex Cooper and Jemal Johnson led the way for Fresno with the captain Juan Pablo Caffa and forward Myer Bevan chipping in with assists. The win snapped the Foxes' winless streak of 5 matches and brings momentum to the side ahead of the 2018 USL season finale next Saturday vs. Real Monarchs at Chukchansi Park.
The Foxes applied pressure on the Colorado goal from the outset, going close with chances for Bevan and Johnson before breaking through in the 23rd minute, when Chaney collected a nifty through ball from Caffa and smashed it home with a left-footed strike from outside the area. Fresno controlled well after the goal, particularly at the back through the work of goalkeeper Kyle Reynish and center backs Ramon Martin Del Camp and Mickey Daly, and protected the lead going into the half.
Los Zorros picked up where they left off in the second half, doubling the lead in the 47th minute when Alex Cooper scored with a left-footed strike after superb hold-up play from Bevan, who cut the ball back to find the Scotsman in perfect shooting position. Johnson wrapped the game up with a fantastic solo effort in the 70th minute, collecting the ball in a wide position on the left, driving past two Colorado defenders and finishing near post from an acute angle to make it 3-0 and ensure the victory.
"For me, what I asked for the players is what I asked all week in training and its that you just got to have more energy and sense of urgency and have to move the ball quicker. Movement on and off the ball has got to be quicker and they did that tonight and that was the difference really," said Foxes head coach Adam Smith. "I made a few changes, was trying to get a few legs on the pitch and to finish strong, that’s what we want to do, and you know, it's been a good season for the most part and I want the guys to finish on a high at the end of the season."
With the win, the Foxes improve to 9-12-12 on the season while Colorado drops to 11-17-5. The Foxes finish the 2018 USL season next Saturday, October 13, taking on fourth-placed Real Monarchs at Chukchansi Park.
