EDINBURG, TEXAS - Los Zorros completed the club's inaugural set of away fixtures deep in the heart of Texas, falling 2-1 to Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at H-E-B Park Saturday night. The match featured sides that had both been eliminated from playoff contention and looked to finish their 2018 campaigns in strong fashion. The hosts opened the scoring nine minutes in, when the Foxes failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to RGV midfielder Jesus Enriquez, who headed home from a tight angle to make it 1-0.
Los Zorros found a response just minutes later, when midfielder Agustin Cazarez headed into the back of the RGV net from a fantastic cross for right back Zach Ellis-Hayden. The goal was the first of the season for the midfielder and spurred Fresno on to sustained spells of pressure in the attacking third throughout the remainder of the first half.
The second half saw plentiful chances for both sides, with the game stretched and both club's goalkeepers making quality saves at each end. The breakthrough came with 6 minutes remaining, when RGV FC forward Carlos Small collected a ball in the Foxes' penalty area, made a nifty move to free himself and slotted past Mark Pais for the go-ahead goal.
With the loss, Fresno moves to 8-12-12 in their inaugural season on 36 points with the hosts climbing to 34 points in 2018 and a 7-12-13 record. The Foxes return to Chukchansi Park next week for 2 home matches in successive weeks, first hosting Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Friday, October 5 followed by Real Monarchs on Saturday, October 13 in the season finale.
